The powerhouse DJ duo After Midnight takes the stage. They stand before a sea of people, poised to unleash upon the crowd an onslaught of crunchy rhythms and heavy electro bass lines. As the first track drops, uproars of enthusiastic screams fill the venue. The crowd begins to manipulate in an organized manner, as their bodies seem powerless to the contortions being driven through them by the relentless downpour of electrifying beats. The team of turntable technicians shuffles through an eclectic range of tunes like an AK-47 does a magazine of armor piercing bullets. Build-ups to bass switches, breakdowns to body rockin' booty drops; their arsenal of weaponry seems virtually unlimited as the night progresses with no letdown. After Midnight is not simply a breathing jukebox, but rather a completely interactive performance fully capable of annihilating dance floors with style and ease.
Demonstrating this awesome capability is After Midnight's three separate mixtapes, each as unique and diverse as the next. Their first mix, cleverly entitled 12:01, flashes through 50 minutes of big-room bangers with a death-ray setting of "obliteration." This mix was heavily influenced by the tracks they were playing each week at their residency at Hollywood's mega-club, The Vanguard.
Following up the 12:01 mix was shaping up to be a difficult task, but with the summer of 2008 rapidly approaching, the importance of a successful sequel seemed vital. Alas, 12:02 was born. However, contrasting to its predecessor, 12:02 is an hour-long journey through such styles as; indie rock, funky house, drum and bass, disco, Miami breaks, minimal, club, and to top it all off, ends with a timeless classic; Orbital's Halcyon. This meticulously crafted mix was a major hit and received rave reviews from countless sources spanning the Web.
Lastly, we come to After Midnight's mini mega mix entitled "Too Hard for the Fucking Radio." This 22-minute monster originally aired on the world-famous radio program Neon Noise that is broadcast locally in Los Angeles on Indie 103.1 FM, and globally on the World-Wide-Web. Again, sounding nothing like After Midnight's previous two mixes, "Too Hard" pounds out wobble-bass bangers and recent rave classics in a fashion that absolutely leaves the listener begging for more at its demise.
Beyond a loyal fan-base, After Midnight is acclaimed and well respected by their peers. Often applauded and well received by many big-time players in the game, their style of DJing is not only fun to watch, but also closely studied by others. Their embellished, monstrous demeanor however, is left on stage; as once they are off, their cool and humble attitude is what they're truly about.
