ShutEye Train has come a long way from the time when the bed-room band known as "Whatever-band" regularly answered the police officers at the door because of noise complaints...It became so regular, that the police were on a first name basis with the band, after just one summer.
Players have come and gone to and from the lineup, and a notable few will be sorely missed.
Archon and Rayl, being brothers, have been the steady core of the band; indeed, it all began with them.
Their endeavors as their own band were temporarily dissolved when the two of them joined on with the Almighty Tim band, where they met bass-player and vocalist Dak Hughes, just two months before it broke up; after the frontman moved to a different state to continue on his path as a solo performer. In the wake of this, Archon and Rayl were quick to ask Dak to stay on. Dak agreed, and thus a new dimension of sound was added to the band, dubbed 'The Shut-Eye Train (after an excerpt from a book entitled "The Boomer Bible" which Archon had been reading through at the time). The reference to the Eugene Fields poem was as yet unknown to them, although once revealed, the band agreed that the name was quite fitting.
The sound of ShutEye Train is an interesting blend of influences, including Hardcore Metal, Psychedelic Rock, and Folk-rock; each band member bringing his own respective influence to the mixing table. Having no actual form of leadership, the members of ShutEye Train write and perform songs in a way that gives all three room to create their parts as they see fit, regardless of who initially "writes" the song. As a result, the signature sound of this band can be difficult to pin-point, but rather than affect them as a hindrance, this trait is actually one of their most endearing qualities. No two performances are ever the same, and this holds true down to each individual performance of any given song.
The current band lineup is:
ARCHON: Guitar, Vocals, Keys, Songwriter. Archon is an eccentric artist. Demented demon of the masterful manipulation of sight and sonic. Well-read, well versed...and gorgeous. (works as a freelance model on the side) Archon's riffs and soloing can pierce you like the coldest hardest steel, or flow around you seamlessly, like ambient sonic liquid. Archon went through extraordinary lengths to study the riffs of Pink Floyd's David Gilmore, note-for-note across the Lydian Scale. Influences include Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, Heather/Sandy Gilmore (and the blood-sucking vampires), Pantera, Motley Crue, Gwar, Janes Addicition, Bauhaus, STP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the Ramones, Alice in Chains, Tool, and (most of all) the almighty Pink Floyd. He plays ESP F-type Electric guitars, Takemine Acoustic/Electric, and his legendary Gibson Les Paul Dragon (Archon Signature Custom), all blasted through a Marshall Stack rig from Hell...His keyboard is a fully up-graded Roland Fantom X-6 digital keyboard/workstation.
DAK: Bass, Vocals, Keys, Songwriter Dak is the laid-back, mellow, and quieter component of S.E.T., preferring to let his Earth-shaking bass riffs speak for him. Influenced by the more up-beat campy folkish tunes, and classic rock, Dak smooths out the balance by also playing in the Lydian Scale Diatonic ...what he brings into S.E.T. perfectly off-sets the harsher edges of Archon and Rayl, creating that 'sweet-spot' of the right blend between such diverse interests. Dak primarily plays an electric Fender P-Bass, an electric Tun'e Bass, and an Aria acoustic Bass. Dak's keyboard is a Korg synthesizer, which is used mainly for backing tracks...
RAYL: Percussion, Vocals, Songwriter Rayl is the drummer...normally there isn't much to say about drummers, but Rayl does not just keep rhythm. Rayl IS rhythm. Drum beats that are constantly on the move, yet based on the heavier rock or metal riffs of faster, harder styles, such as Korn, Metallica, and Pantera. Rayl's peerless ability is that his drum patterns are every bit as protean and chameleonic as Archon's leads and Dak's root-noting signatures. He can sense approaching changes within the infrastructure of any song, with a supernatural accuracy. Rayl's ability to sing while drumming is also impressive, as his voice is almost a dead match with Archon's voice.
